A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by adding thereto a new section, designated §18-2A-10, relating to prohibiting the use of calculators for teaching purposes in grades K through eight.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:

    That the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, be amended by adding thereto a new section, designated §18-2A-10, to read as follows:

ARTICLE 2A. ADOPTION OF TEXTBOOKS, INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES.

§18-2A-10. Calculators prohibited.

    The use of calculators by students is prohibited for instructional purposes in grades K through eight, including, but not limited to, classroom work and homework. Prohibited calculators include, but are not limited to, handheld calculators, computer calculators and other devices that use a mechanical, electronic or a software program to perform basic mathematical calculations: Provided, That this prohibition does not apply to teachers or other educational personnel in furtherance of their instructional responsibilities.



 

    NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to prohibit the student use of calculators for teaching purposes in grades K through eight. The bill permits calculators to be used by educators in furtherance of their instructional responsibilities.


    This secton is new; therefore, it has been completely underscored.
